Combine cataract surgery, silicone oil removal, surgeons suggest
Combined cataract surgery and silicone oil removal produced similar results with faster rehabilitation than two-stage surgery, according to an Austrian study. Assuming patients have a stable retina, the study authors propose combining cataract surgery and silicone oil removal.
Katharina Krepler, MD, and colleagues at the University of Vienna compared two groups of 35 patients each who underwent cataract surgery and silicone oil removal. In group 1, patients had two surgical sessions with cataract surgery before silicone oil removal; in group 2, combined cataract surgery and silicone oil removal was done during one surgical procedure.
Postoperative visual acuity improved by at least 2 Snellen lines in 13 patients in the first group and 15 patients in the second group. Mean visual acuity improvement was not statistically significantly different between the two groups. Complications included transient intraocular pressure rise, retinal detachment, fibrin reaction and persistent IOP rise; none of these was statistically significantly different between the two groups.
