WASHINGTON — For the time being, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will not implement a recommendation to cut Medicare payments to ambulatory service centers for IOLs, according to an American Academy of Ophthalmology press release.

The AAO noted in the press release that the CMS are required to implement a revised payment system for ASCs no later than Jan. 1, 2008. The Medicare regulatory agency agreed to consider findings and cost data when it developed its revised payment system for ASCs. For now, the AAO notes, there will be no immediate impact on ASC IOL payments. The AAO noted that it is “committed to working with CMS to secure fair reimbursement for IOLs and to ensure continuing patient access.”
