Tom Scully, the top person at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has announced he will resign on December 15, a press release from the CMS said.

Mr. Scully is leaving the post after 3 years. He is most noted for his Medicare reform initiatives and efforts to recoup payments and prevent fraud, the CMS release said.

Among his accomplishments were expanding Medicare beneficiary education efforts and participation in the President’s Medicare reform team. He is also credited with the elimination of loopholes between the agency and the states, initiating open door forums and developing quality reform initiatives for the nursing home and home health care sectors in partnership with unions, patient advocacy groups, the AARP and providers, according to the press release.

Mr. Scully has not announced his future plans. No replacement has been named.
