The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has decided to exempt ophthalmologists from accreditation requirements for durable medical equipment, according to a press release from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

As a result of the decision, optical shops will not have to be accredited to bill for glasses after cataract surgery through the durable medical equipment carrier. National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC) numbers may now be applied for without accreditation by physicians who have had their NSC numbers deactivated, who have recently opened a new practice or who previously required accreditation by March 1.

In addition, physicians can now resubmit denied claims upon receipt of a new NSC number, the release said.

While the CMS has not guaranteed that the exemption will be permanent, the AAO plans to contest any future accreditation requirements, according to the release.
