ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has assigned a new product-specific code for billing Medicare for Bausch & Lomb's Retisert fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant, according to a press release from the company.

The new code — J7311 — replaces the general Medicare hospital outpatient code C9225, which was previously used in billing for the implant. The code is effective for procedures performed as of January 1. Health insurers are expected to recognize the new code as billing systems are updated, the B&L press release said.

CMS also published a payment of $19,345 for the implant, equivalent to 106% of the average sales price. Private insurers may reimburse for the implant at different rates, company officials noted in the release.
