SAN FRANCISCO — The ClariFlex IOL is highly biocompatible and well tolerated in eyes at high risk for glaucoma, according to Thomas W. Samuelson, MD, of Minneapolis. Dr. Samuelson also said the Silver-Z insertion system for the lens performs well, with a low incidence of cartridge jams and damaged IOLs.

Dr. Samuelson presented results of a study he conducted with Elizabeth A. Davis, MD, here at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting. The prospective study included 105 eyes of 120 patients implanted with the AMO ClariFlex IOL following phacoemulsification. All eyes had been diagnosed with glaucoma, and all patients were receiving medical treatment alone or with previous surgical treatment. Primary outcome variables for the Silver-Z insertion system (AMO) were damaged or torn haptics or optics, incision size and cartridge jams.

Dr. Samuelson said the insertion system performed well in all eyes. One IOL was damaged while passing through the delivery cartridge, but the torn optic was recognized prior to insertion. He said the IOL was well tolerated in all cases without any giant cell deposition. No IOLs needed to be explanted, he said.

Dr. Samuelson acknowledged a financial interest in his subject matter. The presentation was awarded Best Paper of Session.
