In this issue we present the debut of a new identity campaign for Ocular Surgery News and note two awards recently received in recognition of the quality of our reporting.

Apex awards

The Apex ’99 Awards for Publication Excellence recognized staff writers Ryan DuBosar, Henry Singer and Sara Smith in the category of Feature Writing for their articles on age-related macular degeneration, which appeared in the May 15, 1998, issue as part of the occasional series, “Population at Risk.” Tim Donald, Ocular Surgery News copy chief and executive editor of our International Edition, and I also are honored to have received an award for News Reporting for our October 15, 1998, article on the annual meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, “From Europe: setting value of cataract surgery, halting PCO, exploring frontiers of eye care.”

The Apex awards recognize excellence in editorial content, graphic design and communications effectiveness. Entries are judged by an independent panel of publishing professionals and journalism educators.

New logo, same mission

Appearing for the first time in this issue is the new OSN logo, which makes official the abbreviation that most people have been using for years when referring to the publication. Our thanks go to graphic designer Paul Mertz for creating this distinctive graphic that now will identify this newspaper and all its affiliated enterprises, including our publication supplements, Web sites and medical symposia.

We also introduce a slogan that we think distills both our identity and our mission: “The voice of 63,000 ophthalmologists worldwide.”

First, the math. You might not be familiar with the three regional editions of Ocular Surgery News. Our U.S. edition, founded in 1982 as IOL Today and renamed in September 1984, is distributed to about 16,800 ophthalmologists in the United States. In 1990 we launched Ocular Surgery News International Edition, which has enjoyed great success and is now read by more than 28,000 ophthalmologists in Europe and Asia. The latest addition to the OSN family is Ocular Surgery News Edicion Internacional, launched in January of this year. This newspaper, in Spanish and Portuguese, is produced in partnership with Highlights of Ophthalmology and distributed to just over 18,000 readers in Latin America.

In deciding what concise statement would capture our unique identity and mission, the publication staff of OSN decided that our role as the public forum for the global eye care community was more important than anything else. OSN is a medium for you to communicate with your colleagues, be it in a news report on one of your meeting presentations or in an article, editorial or letter that you write for us. No other news publication can get your message out to 63,000 of your colleagues worldwide. No other news organization covers the world of ophthalmology as completely and brings it home to you as directly. I hope you find reading OSN as invigorating as we do writing, editing and publishing it.
