This summer, Las Vegas will again welcome the Ocular Surgery News Symposium, Glaucoma: Improving Your Odds, June 17-18, 2005, at the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino. The symposium offers attending physicians the opportunity to earn up to 11.5 CME credits.

The 2005 symposium was organized by course directors Louis B. Cantor, MD; John R. Samples, MD; and Dale K. Heuer, MD. The goal of the symposium is to provide new and innovative information concerning laser, medical and surgical therapies; medications in glaucoma treatment; and the results of recent scientific studies on glaucoma therapy.

Meeting program

This year’s symposium continues the traditions established in the previous years, including the video surgery session, which was initiated last year with much success.

This year’s video surgery session, “Glaucoma Surgery: A Video Experience” will be held on Saturday, June 18. The session will cover topics including “ALT/SLT,” by L. Jay Katz, MD; “Surgical Techniques for Trabeculectomy,” by Ike K. Ahmed, MD; and “Non-Penetrating Glaucoma Surgical Procedures,” by Thomas W. Samuelson, MD.

Two new additions to this year’s symposium include the presentation of glaucoma grand rounds cases, with Dr. Heuer as moderator, and several interactive surgical complications sessions. This will include the presentation of six, 10-minute cases, moderated by Dr. Cantor, which pertain to managing early and late complications of trabeculectomy, followed by an interactive question-and-answer session.

Attendees of the 2005 meeting will also have the opportunity to take part in two CME luncheons, “Sound Understanding of Real Glaucoma Efficacy,” will be held on Friday, June 17, and will cover multiple topics, including “Reframing Disease Severity,” by Ronald L. Gross, MD; “Evaluating Endpoints,” by Louis B. Cantor, MD; “Assessing Treatment,” by Steven T. Simmons, MD; and “Optimization of Patient Therapy,” by Robert J. Noecker, MD. The luncheon will include a 10-minute question and answer session. The second luncheon “Glaucoma: Managing for Increased Compliance,” will be held on Saturday, June 18, and will cover “Practical Implementation of Modern Knowledge about Intraocular Pressure,” by John D. Samples, MD; “How I Increase Patient Compliance,” by James C. Tsai, MD; “Adjunctive Therapy: Implementation in an Effective and Patient Friendly Manner,” by Marlene R. Moster, MD. The luncheon will also include a 30-minute question and answer session, complete with case presentations.
