CIBA to market mini glaucoma shunt
ATLANTA CIBA Vision has signed a deal granting it exclusive U.S. and Canadian marketing rights to Optonol's Ex-Press mini glaucoma shunt. A CIBA press release calls the shunt a minimally invasive approach for the surgical treatment of glaucoma where medical and conventional surgical treatments have failed.
The Ex-Press mini glaucoma shunt is a tube made of stainless steel. It is 400 µm in diameter and less than 3 mm long. The device is designed to reduce intraocular pressure by diverting excess aqueous humor from the anterior chamber to a subconjunctival bleb.
The product received U.S. marketing approval in March, and CIBA expects to launch it in the United States in September and in Canada during 2003.
