Chinese Ministry of Health adopts AAO's Preferred Practice Patterns as national standard
SAN FRANCISCO The Chinese Ministry of Health has endorsed the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Preferred Practice Patterns as the national standard for ophthalmic practice and instruction in China, according to a press release from the AAO.
The agreement was formalized at a signing ceremony and 2-day symposium in Beijing last week, the release said.
Although the Chinese Ophthalmological Society had previously endorsed, translated and published the AAO's Preferred Practice Patterns as the standard for the ophthalmic profession, this marks the first time China has mandated standards of patient care and professional training for any medical specialty.
China was one of the first countries approached by the AAO when it partnered with the World Health Organization and the National Eye Institute to begin promoting evidence-based standards through uniform care and treatment guidelines in 2002, the release said.
"I believe it will improve our local ophthalmologists' professional knowledge and clinical skills," Huang Jie-fu, vice president of the Ministry of Health, said in a statement unveiled at the signing ceremony. "It surely will play an important role in promoting Chinese ophthalmology development."
