Certain serum concentrations may increase risk of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy progression

Acta Ophthalmol. 2009;87(5):501-505.

High serum concentration of the hemoglobin subtype HbA1c and lipoprotein a may lead to progression of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes.

According to a review of 106 patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy in a Japanese population followed for up to 2 years, 33 patients (31%) had disease progression. Progression of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy within the study population was associated with HbA1c levels, systolic blood pressure, lipoprotein a levels and fibrinogen levels in blood serum.

Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, researchers identified two significant independent risk factors: HbA1c level (odds ratio = 1.74) and lipoprotein a level (odds ratio = 1.90).
