Central corneal thickness not associated with myopia

Central corneal thickness is not related to degree of myopia, according to a small study. The process of myopia progression does not measurably affect the central cornea, the study authors said.

Lene Pederson and colleagues at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark compared 57 emmetropic subjects to 48 subjects with high myopia (more than –6 D spherical equivalent refraction). Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured using the Haag-Streit Optical Low-Coherence Reflectometry pachymeter.

The mean CCT for people in the emmetropic group was 538.6 µm; in the group with high myopia, it was 527.7 µm. Neither the mean CCT nor the variance showed a statistically significant difference, the study authors found.

The study is published in the September issue of Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica.
