Patients who undergo cataract surgery frequently have systemic and ocular comorbidities, according to an Australian study.
Thuan Quoc Pham, MB, MS, and colleagues at the University of Sydney reviewed the charts of patients that underwent cataract procedures during an 18-month period. Mean patient age at surgery was 74.6 years.
Frequent systemic comorbidities included hypertension (56.3%), diabetes (27.5%), angina (20.2%) and previous myocardial infarct (15%). Major preoperative ocular comorbidities included age-related maculopathy (12.6%), glaucoma (10.6%) and diabetic retinopathy (9%).
The study is published in the August issue of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
