For best postoperative satisfaction, physicians should undersell and over-deliver expectations and results to potential cataract refractive lens surgery patients, a cataract surgeon said.

At the OSN New York annual meeting, Rosa Braga-Mele, MD, FRCSC, said physicians, when discussing the procedure with patients, should emphasize that there are no guaranteed results from cataract surgery and IOL implantation.

Dr. Braga-Mele said that not only is knowing patients' personalities important to achieving best results by matching patients to the appropriate lens, but also knowing patients' existing ocular physiology.

"You want to make sure the patient has a healthy eye," Dr. Braga-Mele said. "There should be no pseudoexfoliation, trauma or small atonic pupils, or you're not going to get the benefit of these lenses."

NSAIDs administered several days preop and postop can be key to successful outcomes. NSAIDs help prevent and treat cystoid macular edema, manage postop inflammation, prevent intraoperative miosis during cataract surgery, and reduce postop pain and discomfort, rendering patients more satisfied with results, Dr. Braga-Mele said.
