Case study: VKH syndrome, traumatic brain injury might be linked

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome might have been caused by a traumatic brain injury in a patient, according to a recently published case study.

Daniel G. Federman, MD, and colleagues reported the case of a patient with severe ulcerative colitis who developed VKH syndrome, an uncommon disorder characterized by uveitis and neurologic and cutaneous abnormalities.

VKH syndrome is currently thought to be a T-cell-mediated autoimmune disorder. In this case report, the patient’s history of a traumatic brain injury “might have been responsible for an abnormal immunologic milieu and the occurrence of ulcerative colitis, VKH syndrome and severe reactive arthritis,” the authors said in the February issue of Southern Medical Journal.
