Case study: Trauma with phakic IOL may hasten cataract progression

Ocular trauma after implantation of an iris-fixated phakic IOL may cause rapid cataract progression, according to a case report.

Gonzalo Muñoz, MD, of the Ophthalmology Institute of Alicante, Spain, detailed the case of a 32-year-old woman with bilateral iris-fixated phakic IOLs. The patient presented with cortical cataract 2 weeks after minor ocular trauma. The distance between the phakic IOL and the crystalline lens was 0.82 mm; the distance between the phakic IOL and the corneal endothelium was 2.3 mm.

Details of the case are published in the June issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
