Young patients without vascular risk factors may develop bilateral posterior ischemic optic neuropathy after lumbar spinal surgery, according to one surgeon.

Marjorie Murphy, MD, of Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, presented the case report of a 33-year-old woman who had immediate visual loss after uncomplicated lumbar surgery. The patient underwent serial visual field testing, fundus exams and ERG. Bilateral posterior ischemic optic neuropathy was confirmed 2 months after her spinal surgery with the development of bilateral optic disc pallor and normal ERG.

The report is published in the July issue of Ophthalmology.
