Intravitreal injection of voriconazole effectively resolved fungal endophthalmitis that was resistant to conventional antifungal agents, a retrospective case series found.

Parveen Sen, MS, of Sankara Nethralaya in Tamil Nadu, India, and colleagues examined the outcomes of one or more intravitreal voriconazole injections in five patients with refractory fungal endophthalmitis.

Endophthalmitis resolved in all cases. Visual acuity remained stable in two patients and improved in three patients, two of whom achieved 20/120 or better vision. Evisceration was avoided in one patient who received maximal antifungal treatment including voriconazole, according to the authors.

The case series is published in the October issue of Retina.
