A patient with keratoconus developed a full-thickness corneal perforation after 30 minutes of exposure to a tanning lamp without eye protection, according to a recently published case study.
"We believe this to be the first case of a corneal perforation secondary to [ultra-violet] radiation," Charlotte Funnell, MRCOphth, and colleagues reported in Cornea.
The patient's cornea was temporarily repaired with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive until penetrating keratoplasty was performed, the authors reported.
"With an increased understanding of the pathophysiology of UV damage, treatment should be aimed at modulating the disease to reduce the likelihood of a poor outcome," Dr. Funnell and colleagues concluded.
