Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA, named dean of Keck School of Medicine

Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA, has been appointed dean of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and will begin serving in his new position Nov. 1, the university announced.

Dr. Puliafito, Ocular Surgery News Retina/Vitreous Section Editor, will also serve as a professor of ophthalmology and health management and will hold the May S. and John Hooval Dean's Chair in Medicine, which has a term of 5 years and 8 months, according to a press release from the university.

"I am honored to be part of the leadership team at the Keck School and at the University of Southern California," Dr. Puliafito said in the release.

"The Keck School is poised to become a leader in American medicine. I was attracted by USC's extraordinary commitment to the Keck School's growth and success, a dynamic clinical and basic science faculty, superb new hospital and laboratory facilities and USC's unparalleled support for meeting the health care needs of the Los Angeles community," he said.

Dr. Puliafito earned his medical degree at Harvard University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and as chairman of the ophthalmology department at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
