Carl Zeiss Meditec reports 5.4% increase in yearly revenue

JENA, Germany — Carl Zeiss Meditec reported a 5.4% gain in consolidated revenue in fiscal year 2007-2008, but consolidated revenue in ophthalmic systems dropped by 2.3% from the previous year, the company announced in a press release.

Net income increased by 13.2% from the previous year to Euro 54 million. Earnings per share were Euro 0.66.

In 2007-2008, consolidated revenue totaled Euro 600.1 million compared with Euro 569.7 million the previous year. Revenue growth in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region and the Asia-Pacific region was strong, the release said.

Fourth-quarter consolidated revenue in the Americas region was Euro 212.8 million, a 12.7% decrease from the previous year, mainly because of sagging currencies. Adjusted for currency declines, the decrease in revenue was 2.8%. The region's share of consolidated revenue was 35.4%, down from 42.8% the previous year.

Consolidated revenue in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region rose by 14.7% for the year. Growth was strongest in the Asia-Pacific region, where consolidated revenue increased by 16.6% from the previous year.

The downturn in ophthalmic systems revenue was mainly attributed to the weak U.S. dollar and Japanese yen. Consolidated revenue in this division fell from Euro 291.6 million a year ago to Euro 285 million. Surgical ophthalmology revenue, however, increased by 48% to Euro 74 million. The increase was partly the result of Zeiss acquiring Acri.Tec GmbH at the start of the fiscal year, according to the release.
