Careful screening can avoid complications with Artisan hyperopia IOL, surgeons say
Complications with a phakic IOL for hyperopia can be avoided by screening out patients with convex irides and shallow anterior chambers, a study suggests.
Ruchi Saxena, MS, and colleagues at Erasmus Medical Center in The Netherlands reported on implantation of the Ophtec Artisan Hyperopia phakic IOL in 26 eyes of 13 patients with refractive errors ranging from +3 D to + 11 D. Average follow-up in their report was 22 months.
Twenty-four of the eyes had a best corrected visual acuity of 0.5 or better at all follow-up exams. A significant negative correlation between anterior chamber depth and endothelial cell loss was seen. Two patients experienced posterior synechiae with pigment deposits in both eyes. One of these patients, who had convex irides, underwent implant removal within 2 years.
The study is published in the July issue of Ophthalmology.
