KYUNGGYI-DO, Korea — Using a capsular tension ring helps to reduce postop IOL decentration and tilt for at least 2 months after cataract surgery, a small study here showed.

Researchers here Ilsan Paik Hospital performed cataract surgery in both eyes of 20 patients between the ages of 57 and 75. Patients were implanted with an Alcon AcrySof MA60BM in each eye, and one eye of each patient also received a capsular tension ring. All IOLs were implanted in the capsular bag after a continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis smaller than the IOL optic was created and phaco was performed. Follow-up was at 7, 30 and 60 days.

In the 20 eyes with both an IOL and capsular tension ring, the extent of IOL decentration was statistically significantly less than in eyes with an IOL alone. The amount of IOL tilting also was significantly less in the eyes with the capsular tension ring.

The study is published in the May issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
