C. pneumoniae not associated with AION

VIENNA — Previous infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae is not associated with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, according to a study conducted here.

Pia V. Vécsei, MD, and colleagues at the University of Vienna Medical School, examined sera of 14 consecutive patients with AION and compared the results to 14 age- and sex-matched control patients who had noncardiovascular and nonpulmonary disorders.

In the control group, 36% were IgA positive, 79% were IgG positive and 7% were IgM positive for chlamydial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antibodies.

In the AION group, 43% were positive for IgA, 79% were IgG positive and 0% were IgM positive for chlamydial LPS antibodies. This did not differ significantly from matched controls, the study authors said.

Nucleic acid amplification tests also did not detect specific C. pneumoniae sequences in the AION patients or the control group.

The report is published in the journal Ophthalmologica.
