Bleeding during gonioscopy can occur after deep sclerectomy
Bleeding during gonioscopy can occur even months after deep sclerectomy, according to a recent report.
Javier Moreno-Montañés, MD, PhD and Rosa Rodríguez-Conde, MD, describe two eyes of two patients with open-angle glaucoma and cataract who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification and deep sclerectomy with an SKGel (Cornéal) hyaluronic acid implant.
In both eyes, bleeding during gonioscopic examination occurred 7 to 8 months after the combined surgery. The blood appeared to originate from vessels around the window in Descemets membrane and was probably due to manipulation or rocking of the goniolens, the authors reported in the Journal of Glaucoma.
The surgeons recommend conducting gonioscopic exams carefully in patients who have undergone deep sclerectomy to avoid this complication.
