Two types of teas helped prevent cataracts in diabetic rats, according to a study.

Joe Vinson, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Scranton (Penn.) fed green and black teas for 3 months to rats with diabetes.

“At levels that would be equivalent to less than five cups of tea per day for a human, both teas significantly inhibited cataract formation relative to a control group” that did not consume the tea, according to an American Chemical Society press release on the study.

Both types of tea decreased the glucose levels in the rats, “which in turn affects other biochemical pathways that accelerate diabetic complications such as cataracts,” the release said.
