Bitoric LASIK may spare tissue in astigmatism correction

Bitoric ablation may be a more effective, more tissue-sparing method than standard LASIK for the correction of mixed astigmatism, according to a study.
Mohamed A. Hassaballa, MD, FRSCEd, and colleagues at the Institute of Ophthalmology in Alicante, Spain, comparatively studied 30 eyes of 15 patients with mixed astigmatism. Each patient had one eye treated with bitoric ablation and one with monotoric ablation. Follow-up was 6 months.
The eyes that underwent bitoric ablation showed a statistically significant improvement in mean uncorrected visual acuity, mean spherical equivalent and mean refractive cylinder. Eyes that underwent monotoric ablation showed a statistical improvement in refractive cylinder only.
Better results were obtained in the mean incremental change in uncorrected visual acuity, best corrected visual acuity, spherical equivalent and refractive cylinder in the eyes with bitoric ablation.
The study is published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
