SAN FRANCISCO — Bimatoprost effectively lowered the intraocular pressure in patients who were nonresponders to latanoprost, according to a poster presentation here.

In an open-label, single-center monocular study, Robert D. Williams, MD, instilled latanoprost in one eye of 51 patients with IOPs of 22 mm Hg and 34 mm Hg. Patients were evaluated at 4 weeks and 8 weeks.

According to the study, 21 patients who experienced an IOP reduction of less than 3 mm Hg were considered nonresponders. Only these patients were switched to bimatoprost and subsequently treated for 8 weeks.

At last follow-up, the mean IOP reduction from baseline for bimatoprost was 5.4 mm Hg. After switching from latanoprost to bimatoprost for 8 weeks, bimatoprost provided an additional 3.5-mm Hg reduction in pressure (P < .001), the study authors said.
