Biaxial microincision, coaxial small-incision cataract surgeries have similar postop macular thickness results

At 8 weeks after cataract surgery, no significant differences for intraindividual increase of foveal thickness and macular volume in biaxial microincision or coaxial small-incision cases were found by optical coherence tomography.
"No clinically relevant differences in foveal thickness or macular volume were observed after biaxial microincision and coaxial small-incision clear corneal cataract surgery. The blood-retinal barrier did not seem to be influenced by either procedure," the authors said.
The prospective randomized study examined 70 eyes of 70 patients who had either biaxial microincision surgery or conventional coaxial phacoemulsification. At 1 day, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after surgery, Stratus OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec) was used to evaluate cases.
The biaxial group had a median foveal thickness increase from 160 µm preoperatively to 168 µm at 8 weeks postoperatively and a median macular volume increase from 2.43 mm³ to 2.57 mm³.
The coaxial group had a median foveal thickness increase from 164 µm to 170 µm at 8 weeks, with a median macular volume increase from 2.45 mm³ to 2.55 mm³.
