Benzodiazepine, older age risk factors for delirium post-cataract, study finds
The incidence of delirium following cataract surgery is higher in older patients and in those who received benzodiazepine premedication, according to a study.
Researchers in Israel evaluated 296 patients who underwent cataract surgery, of whom 4.4% had immediate postoperative delirium. Two variables significantly differentiated between delirious and nondelirious patients. Older patients (mean age 82.1) experienced delirium more than younger patients (mean age 73). Additionally, use of benzodiazepine as a premedication was also a risk factor for delirium. Of the patients with delirium, 69% received benzodiazepine as a premedication.
The study is published in the September issue of International Psychogeriatrics.
