Bausch & Lomb's oxygen permeable contact lens material approved by FDA

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bausch & Lomb's Boston XO2 gas permeable contact lens material has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for daily wear in patients with ametropia and certain irregular corneal conditions, the company announced in a press release.

The new material allows 40% more oxygen to reach the eye than the original Boston XO material. The increased oxygen flow allows the cornea to breathe, reducing swelling and the risk of abnormal blood vessel growth, the release said.

The material is also suitable for orthokeratology and for managing certain irregular corneal conditions, such as keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneration, as well as after penetrating keratoplasty or refractive surgery. The FDA also approved the material for use in custom fit contact lenses up to 21 mm in diameter, according to the release.
