MADISON, N.J. — Bausch + Lomb is voluntarily recalling six lots of Murocel methylcellulose lubricant ophthalmic solution, USP 1%, in the interest of patient safety, according to a company press release.

The recall of the over-the-counter ophthalmic solution, which is indicated for the temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye, is based on routine stability testing that showed the lots were out of specification for preservative efficacy. No adverse events have been reported in association with the out-of-specification lots.

The lot numbers are 467061, 487551, 548051, 132171, 136571 and 140181. Expiration dates range from Sept. 30, 2011, to Jan. 31, 2013.

Consumers currently using this product should call Bausch + Lomb’s customer service center for instructions on returns and reimbursement at 1-800-553-5340.

Bausch + Lomb will discontinue the product entirely after the recall is complete. Bausch + Lomb has chosen to discontinue Murocel because the company currently has products within its portfolio to treat the same symptoms for which Murocel is indicated.

The recall is limited only to the United States; it does not affect Europe, the Middle East or Asia-Pacific regions, the release said.
