ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bausch & Lomb has recalled 12 lots of its ReNu MultiPlus solution after discovering elevated levels of trace iron, according to a press release from the company. The source of the contamination has been traced to a single batch of raw material from an outside supplier, the release said.

Bausch & Lomb initiated the voluntary recall after receiving three customer complaints of discolored solution. In higher concentrations, iron can combine with other compounds to discolor the solution and shorten its shelf life, according to the release.

The company believes all affected lots, manufactured 1 year ago at its Greenville, S.C., plant, have already been used by consumers. But it has not received any reports of serious adverse events, the release said.

Approximately 1 million bottles from nine of the 12 lots were distributed in the United States. The remaining lots went to Canada, Latin America, Korea and Taiwan, where recall efforts have also begun, according to the release.

The recalled lots carry the expiration date "2008 - 03" on the bottle. Affected lot numbers include GC6030, GC6037, GC6038, GC6045, GC6048, GC6052, GC6061, GC6063, GC6072, GC6073, GC6080 and GC6085.
