PARIS — Bausch + Lomb's new Early Vision Institute will focus on prevention, treatment and research, according to a company representative.

A first effort of this platform is the Pediatric Cataract Initiative, which is in partnership with Lions Club International Foundation, the first not-for-profit in the world.

"I can think of no better partner," Daniel McWard, director of strategic communications, surgical, at Bausch + Lomb, said at a press conference hosted by the corporation here at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

"To our knowledge, there has never been a coordinated global effort to address children with pediatric cataracts," Mr. McWard said.

Bausch + Lomb has committed $350,000 in 2010, and the first grant will be announced at the end of the year. Bausch + Lomb and Lions Club International are looking for programs that are innovative and scalable. In its first year of the program, the initiative will focus on prevention and treatment in China.
