MIAMI — Bascom Palmer Eye Institute announced it will undergo a $17 million expansion of its facilities in Palm Beach County, in effect tripling its space.

According to a press release from Bascom Palmer, the new facility will include a 35,000 square foot patient care center and a 10,000 square foot surgical center.

The new facility will be “a model for 21st century ophthalmology centers,” said Carmen Puliafito, MD, MBA, chairman of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Retina/Vitreous Section Editor of the Ocular Surgery News Editorial Board.

“It will allow us to see three times the number of patients, to perform surgery in our own, custom-designed surgical center and to create a magnet for the best and brightest ophthalmologic health care specialists,” Dr. Puliafito said.

The new facility is expected to open in 2006, according to the press release.
