NUSA DUA, Indonesia — The use of a Bangerter filter allowed for faster visual improvement in amblyopic patients, although visual results at 1 year with and without the filter were similar, a presenter said here.

"Children with Bangerter filter had a more rapid visual acuity recovery; however, after 1 year, no significant difference between the two treatment groups was found," Pia Agervi, MD, said during the joint meeting of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

The study looked at 66 children with amblyopia and anisometropia, aged 4 to 5 years. The children were randomized to spectacles alone or spectacles plus a Bangerter filter.

The mean time to resolution of amblyopia was 3.9 months in the spectacle group and 2.2 months in the Bangerter filter group, a statistically significant difference. At 1 year, there was 95% resolution in both groups with increased median spherical equivalent refractive error, decreased anisometropia and improved binocular function.
