B&L posts 7% sales gain for quarter

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Worldwide net sales for Bausch & Lomb increased 7% to $608.3 million in the second quarter of 2005, up from $566.5 million in the second quarter of 2004, the company announced in a press release.

The sales increase was greatest in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with contact lenses showing the most growth, the company stated. Revenues in the United States were $226.5 million, up less than 2% from the previous year’s second quarter. The U.S. market represents 37% of the company’s total sales, the press release said.

Growth in cataract and vitreoretinal products was led by B&L’s IOL and phacoemulsification lines, the release said. In constant currency, IOL sales growth was 9%, with double-digit gains for the SofPort and Akreos foldable IOL models.

Refractive surgical growth was attributed to a 16% increase in sales of per-procedure cards used in LASIK and increased service revenue. This was offset by “somewhat” lower equipment sales, the release said.
