B&L, Oasis settle patent suit on keratome blades

A 3-year-old patent infringement lawsuit over replacement microkeratome blades has been settled, the companies involved in the suit announced recently. The suit was filed by Bausch & Lomb against Oasis Medical in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in October 2000, the companies noted in a joint press release.

Under the settlement terms, Oasis will stop manufacturing and selling blades for the Bausch & Lomb Hansatome microkeratome. In return, B&L will license its technology to Oasis to manufacture pivoting microkeratome blade assemblies for non-B&L microkeratomes.

B&L is also entitled to acquire the Oasis microkeratome blade patent previously issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, according to the press announcement. B&L will further license the Oasis proprietary manufacturing technology for microkeratome blades. Other financial details will not be discussed by either party, the press release indicated.
