GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Combination phaco-vitrectomy surgery plus triamcinolone and bevacizumab significantly reduces macular thickness and improves visual acuity, according to a study presented here.

Sergio Eustolio Hernández Da Mota, MD, and colleagues conducted a prospective, non-randomized pilot study evaluating the efficacy of using triamcinolone and Avastin (bevacizumab, Genentech) during combination cataract and vitrectomy surgery. The researchers included 13 patients aged 40 to 78 years who had subcapsular posterior cataract and clinically significant diffuse macular edema.

Dr. Hernández Da Mota presented the study results at the Mexican Congress of Ophthalmology.

The researchers found the combination surgery produced a significant reduction in macular thickness, measured using optical coherence tomography. Mean visual acuities also improved from 20/400 preoperatively to 20/40 at 6 months follow-up, Dr. Hernández Da Mota said.
