SAN DIEGO — Positive visual outcomes with an aspheric single-piece Collamer IOL were found in three studies, a physician reported.

Kenneth Lipstock, MD, a presenter at the nanoFLEX Blended Vision Mini Symposium sponsored by STAAR Surgical held during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, said the nanoFLEX IOL (STAAR Surgical) has multiple benefits. Those include the potential for better distance acuity, reading acuity and intermediate reading acuity and a comfortable reading speed for newspaper print. It also offers accommodation to patients with preoperative pathologies such as dry eye and age-related macular degeneration.

He presented results from three studies: MAST, Blended Vision 1 and Blended Vision 2.

"Unlike multifocals, it is not so much preop pathology but postop pathology. If somebody gets a branch retinal vein occlusion, is a diabetic ... they could always wear glasses with best corrected visual [acuity]," Dr. Lipstock said.

A high rate of spectacle independence was reported in the studies, as well as 100% patient satisfaction.

"[The nanoFLEX] gives pan-focal visual outcomes comparable to premium IOLs ... a great option for patients who cannot afford premium IOL presbyopic correction," Dr. Lipstock said.
