SAN DIEGO—Last night, thousands of ophthalmologists and companies serving the ophthalmology industry flocked to the San Diego Convention Center, as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery kicked off its annual meeting here, April 28-May 2, 2001.

Seen around the exhibit hall Friday night: Pharmacia is highlighting its newly-approved CeeOn Edge Healon 5 for cataract surgery; Allergan is promoting newly-approved Lumigan, for the treatment of glaucoma, as well as Alphagan P (scheduled to be introduced in the U.S. in June); Visx is demonstrating its Star S3 with Wave Scan enhancements and Novartis Ophthalmics is focusing on its anti-glaucoma drug Rescula. Ophthalmic instrument suppliers are by far the largest group represented here, with about 50 exhibitors, followed closely by laser/laser services and PRK and LASIK services suppliers.

The ASCRS symposium officially opens today, April 28.
