FAIRFAX, Va. — The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery has launched the ASCRS International Ectasia Registry, the organization announced in a press release. The project, which will be directed by R. Doyle Stulting, MD, PhD, aims to more precisely define ectasia, determine its frequency and identify risk factors, the release said.

The ASCRS International Ectasia Registry project will be completed in two phases. The first phase will gather data on post-LASIK ectasia and identify physicians and patients to participate in the project's second phase. The second phase will involve prospective observational studies aimed at determining the incidence of ectasia. It will also more precisely quantify the impact of preoperative risk factors, according to the release.

"Because the registry may allow identification of risk factors that are not currently recognized, it is a giant step forward in addressing one of the most challenging complications of LASIK that we face today," said Dr. Stulting, chair of the ASCRS Refractive Clinical Committee, in the release.

The International Ectasia Registry will be housed on the ASCRS Web site at www.ectasiaregistry.com. Once registered, physicians and researchers can submit their own data and manage, collect and review global data, according to the release.
