ASCRS film festival winners announced

SAN DIEGO -- Julian D. Stevens, FRCS, of the United Kingdom won the Grand Prize in this year's ASCRS Film Festival. Prof. Stevens' entry, "Correcting ocular aberrations: wavefront sensing and adaptive optics," won the top honors among the nearly 200 entries.

Other winners included:

Anthony Maloof, MD, of the United Kingdom for "Corneal phaco burns: pathogenesis and prevention," in the cataract complications category.

"Phacoemulsification as the primary treatment of acute closed-angle glaucoma," from Vish Padmanabhan, MD, of Singapore, took first place in cataract/implant surgery.

"Phako pfollies," entered by Luther L. Fry, MD, won under the category of in-house productions.

In the instrument/devices category, "Laser knife, femtosecond LASIK," produced by Stephen G. Slade, MD, took the top honors.

Suresh K. Pandey, MD, of Charleston, S.C., saw his entry, "Interlenticular opacification: clinical and pathologic lessons for management and prevention," take the highest honors in the intraocular lens category.

In new techniques, "Ring stabilization of toric plate-haptic IOLs," entered by Tobias H. Neuhann, MD, of Germany, won first place.

"Revelation: the origin of emulsification," entered by William J. Fishkind, MD, of Tucson, won in the quality teaching category.

In refractive complications, "Iris-supported and angle-fixated phakic intraocular lenses: the complications," entered by Ignacio Jimenez-Alfaro, MD, from Spain, took the top honors.

"Soaking, stretching and stamping out striae," entered by Roger Steinert, MD, of Boston, won in the refractive surgery category.

In the special interest category, "FDA or DWR," an entry by Robert Osher, MD, in Cincinnati, won first place.
