CHICAGO — The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery remains the most powerful advocate for the concerns of the anterior segment eye surgeon, according to the society's outgoing president.

"ASCRS' voice is heard at the highest levels of government, and our strength and collaboration with like-minded organizations have raised our impact," said Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, outgoing ASCRS president and Chief Medical Editor of Ocular Surgery News, at the Opening General Session of the ASCRS annual meeting.

Dr. Lindstrom cited the forestalling of a significant cut in Medicare reimbursement last year as proof that the ASCRS is succeeding in letting eye surgeons' voices be heard.

"Central to our advocacy efforts is a strong voice in Washington, D.C., which advocates for a long-term solution to our broken Medicare reimbursement system," he said.

Dr. Lindstrom said the society will continue to advocate for its members, in collaboration with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, but called on the members themselves to continue their support of eyePAC, the society's political action committee, and to get involved by contacting local representatives with their concerns.
