The Artisan IOL, combined with penetrating keratoplasty, anterior vitrectomy and angle synechiolysis, can be an effective option in the management of aphakic bullous keratopathy, a clinical study found.

Anastasios John Kanellopoulos, MD, implanted the Artisan iris-fixated IOL in 14 eyes of 11 patients with bullous keratopathy. During follow-up of 12 to 36 months, the surgeon tracked visual acuity, refractive error, IOP, tonography, graft clarity, IOL centration and complications.

Postoperatively, mean visual acuity improved from 20/400 to 20/50, mean spherical refractive error was –2.65 D, mean IOP was 17.5 mm Hg, tonography improved by 55% and all grafts were clear. No IOL decentrations or serious complications were noted.

The study is published in the April issue of Cornea.
