Artificial retina device shows good results in pilot trial

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — A number of patients in a multicenter pilot trial of an artificial retina device have achieved "measurable improvement" in vision, according to press release from the device's developer.

The study is evaluating the Artificial Silicon Retina device (Optobionics Corp.) in 20 patients with retinitis pigmentosa under a Food and Drug Administration investigational device exemption. Analyzing interim results of the study, researchers found that four of 10 patients (40%) without potential confounding factors such as postoperative cataract progression achieved a 10-letter improvement in visual acuity at 12 months follow-up. This is in contrast to the typical loss of vision that occurs in untreated patients with retinitis pigmentosa, according to the release.
