Argentinean meeting brings local, regional issues to the forefront

BUENOS AIRES — The Argentinean Society of Ophthalmology’s Annual Course officially got under way Monday with opening remarks from the president of the society, Carlos Plotkin, MD.
Dr. Plotkin encouraged the approximately 2,500 attendees to take advantage of Argentina’s largest annual ophthalmology meeting by participating in its educational sessions as well as its social opportunities. The other major meeting in the country, the Argentinean Congress of Ophthalmology, occurs only every 4 years and will next be held in July 2007 in Buenos Aires.
The exchange of ideas is enriching, Dr. Plotkin said, whether is takes place in the meeting rooms, in the hallways or during a coffee break.
He said that the issues important to ophthalmology in Argentina go beyond the acquisition of technology and the learning of technical procedures and surgical advances. It is “not just about machines,” he said, but also about creating organizational systems wherever health care is provided.
Finding ways to better organize medical practice could involve a variety of factors, including improving medical training and doctor-patient relationships, he said.
