A system for objective assessment of posterior capsular opacification correlated well with contrast sensitivity loss from PCO, investigators in Vienna, Austria, found. The AQUA system may be useful for clinical studies on the development and prevention of PCO, the researchers said.

To evaluate the correlation between contrast sensitivity on the AQUA program, Wolf Buehl, MD, and colleagues at the Medical University of Vienna measured contrast sensitivity, distance visual acuity and pupil size of 30 pseudophakic eyes with PCO of varying intensity. Retroillumination images were analyzed using the AQUA software program. All measurements were taken before and after capsulotomy.

The correlation between change in PCO score and change in contrast sensitivity was highest for row B on the Functional Acuity Contrast Test and lowest for row E. The correlation with change in visual acuity was 0.57.

The study is published in the November issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
