BEIJING — One of the most important developments in the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology for 2011 will be the introduction of a peer-review journal, APAO Secretary General Dennis S.C. Lam, MD, said at the opening ceremony of the congress.

The online-only journal is targeted for a January 2011 launch if possible with a goal of being indexed within 2 to 3 years, Prof. Lam said. Additional goals of the journal would be to become one of the top 20 ophthalmology journals in the world and one of the top three in the Asia-Pacific region.

Prof. Lam said the journal should become one of the benefits of membership in the APAO while becoming one of the most important assets of the society.

In his speech, Prof. Lam also outlined structural changes taking place in the leadership of the APAO, and he gave an overview of past and upcoming APAO congresses. In addition to Sydney in 2011, future congresses will be held in Busan, Korea, in 2012, New Delhi in 2013 and Tokyo in 2014 as part of the World Ophthalmology Congress there.
