Anterior segment OCT promising as screening tool for narrow angle cases
Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging. 2009;40(4):389-398.
Anterior segment optical coherence tomography could assist in assessing the anterior chamber angle, according to a new study that compared it with gonioscopy.
"[Anterior segment] OCT appears to be a promising screening tool for narrow angles," the study authors said. "Population-based normative databases can be created, and risk of angle closure can be assessed according to the age- and race-dependent normative data."
The study retrospectively analyzed Visante anterior segment optical coherence tomography (Carl Zeiss Meditec) images of 303 eyes of 155 patients. Anterior segment OCT angle recess area and three angle opening distances were compared with gonioscopic measurements.
The researchers found that anterior segment OCT parameters had a "non-linear relationship" with gonioscopy. Angle recess area had the highest correlation, while low- and high-resolution image correlations were modest.
